There are remedies that feel less like medicine and more like being remembered.
These remedies aren't about pushing harder, or leaning in.
Rather, they're about gently guiding you back to yourself
This Mother’s Day week, I wanted to share two remedies that I think about often when it comes to motherhood, nervous system overwhelm, emotional depletion, and the quiet ways women disappear into caring for everyone else.
One herbal remedy.
One homeopathic remedy.
Both deeply supportive in their own ways.
Motherwort ~ The Herb That Softens the Heart
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) has long been associated with the heart, the nervous system, and the emotional terrain of motherhood. This is possibly my favourite ally and the one I lean on most for myself and many of my clients.
She’s bitter. Grounding. Protective.
The kind of plant that seems to place a hand on your shoulder and whisper: slow down, breathe, let your shoulder's drop.
Traditionally, Motherwort has been used to support:
- Nervous tension
- Stress and irritability
- Palpitations linked to anxiety or overwhelm
- Menstrual tension and hormonal stress
- Emotional restlessness
For many mothers, the mental load becomes physical. Tight shoulders. Shallow breathing. Snapping more easily. Feeling “on” all the time.
Motherwort reminds the body how to exhale.
She’s especially beautiful for the mother who loves deeply but hasn’t had a moment to connect with herself lately and is drifting away from her centre.
Not a sedative.
Not numbing.
Just grounding.
Fyi, Motherwort is bitter. A fresh leaf can be held gently in the mouth and bitten slightly to release juices, but this isn't a herb most women dive into drinking as a tea. This beautiful herb is most commonly taken as a tincture, often sweetened with a touch of honey.
Sepia ~ The Homeopathic Remedy for the Overdrawn Mother
There is a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t always look tired.
It looks like irritability, withdrawal, or apathy.
Wanting everyone to stop needing something from you for just one moment.
Even after a weekend to yourself, it doesn't feel like enough. Even after a good sleep, you still don't feel rested.
In homeopathy, Sepia is one of the classic remedies associated with the overextended woman who has given beyond her reserves for too long.
She may feel:
- Emotionally flat or disconnected
- Easily irritated by loved ones
- Overstimulated by touch or noise
- Exhausted yet unable to fully rest
- Burdened by responsibility
- Like she’s “lost herself”
And often, underneath it all, there is guilt. Because she does love her family deeply.
Sepia isn’t about becoming a better mother.
It’s about helping a woman reconnect with herself again. Finding that inner joy, that inner light that has grown distant these last months or years.
Additional Supports
When working with the overdrawn or depleted woman, we don't go straight to herbs and homeopathic remedies without looking at nutrition, sleep, movement, emotional support, self care practices and more.
A deleted woman is often under nourished. Looking to healthy, balanced meals that include plenty of protein, fats and carbs (yup) so that you can replenish your body is vital. The interesting thing is that using the remedies listed above can help motivate oneself to eat better, move more and claim space for self care.
A Gentle Reminder
Mothers do not need to earn rest.
They do not need to reach complete burnout before receiving support.
Sometimes healing begins with simply being seen clearly.
If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear from you.
